Renfrewshire were crowned ‘Kings’ of the Castle after sealing the Scottish Area Team Championship title on home soil today.

The GolfKings-sponsored matchplay event reached its climax at Ranfurly Castle, with Renfrewshire claiming a 5.5 – 3.5 success over Lanarkshire.

Kilmacolm’s Andrew Farmer sealed the winning point in the nation’s premier amateur team championship, contested over three days by the 16 Area Associations of the Scottish Golf Union.
Renfrewshire, led by playing captain Ronnie Clark and team manager David MacFarlane, achieved a fifth title and emulated their last success at Crail in 2009.

Jubilant Renfrewshire team celebrate“It’s nice to win again, reach five stars if you like, and I think the home soil did help,” said Clark. “We have all played here before in team matches and other events.

“Lanarkshire are a good side so it was important to build a lead in the morning. We have a strong team spirit and it’s pretty much the same side every year, with the odd youngster coming in. I’m delighted for all the guys.”

The hosts took the early advantage in the tight morning foursomes ties, with two matches going to the third extra hole.

Renfrewshire pair Matthew Clark and Gordon Stevenson held their nerve to win at the 21st against Craig Ross and Steven Rennie, but the Lanarkshire duo of Stewart Henderson and Ross Hinshelwood levelled matters after coming through at the same hole against Craig Watson and Michael Daily.
But it was 2-1 for Renfrewshire at lunch, as Ronnie Clark and Farmer eased to a 4-3 success against Jamie Lamb and Colin Baird.

Daily added to Renfrewshire’s lead, winning the first of the six singles ties against Rennie 5&4, only for Henderson to reply with a 4&3 victory against Stevenson.

But Ronnie Clark and Farmer saw Renfrewshire home with their triumphs, with Farmer claiming the vital point in his 2&1 win against Hinshelwood.

In the top match, Matthew Clark and Craig Ross played out a titanic contest with Ross finally prevailing with an eagle at the par-4 22nd thanks to a fine drive at the 270-yard hole. With the overall match over, Ross and Baird picked up their balls in the bottom game for a half point apiece.

In Saturday’s semi-finals, Renfrewshire beat Glasgow 3.5 – 1.5, while Lanarkshire saw off Perth & Kinross 3&2.

It will be hosts Renfrewshire against Lanarkshire in Sunday's final of the GolfKings-sponsored Scottish men's area team golf championship at Ranfurly Castle Golf Club.
Renfrewshire, leading qualifiers for the match-play stages, continued in "who's gonna be second" form by beating North 4-1 and then a fancied Glasgow side 3 1/2-1 1/2.

Lanarkshire, who were sixth of the eight qualifiers from an original field of 16 area teams, beat Strlingshire 3-2 in the morning and then toppled the No 2 seeds Perth and Kinross 3-2 in the semi-final which finished in the evening.

Renfrewshire last won the area title in 2005. Lanarkshire have to go back a bit farther than that for their last national six-man side success - 1998.

The Renfrewshire team of six contains the consistent Matthew Clark (Kilmacolm) as its lynchpin, Craigmillar Park Open winner Craig Watson, a one-time British Amateur champion, and Ronnie Clark, Andrew Farmer, Gordon Stevenson and Michael Daily.

Lanarkshire's line-up includes Kirkhill's Craig Ross, the leading individual in the 36-hole eliminating stroke-play contest on Friday, and the experienced Steven Rennie (pictured right) but they are  all very competent players - Colin Baird, Jamie Lamb, Stewart Henderson and Ross Hinshelwood.

UNDER 18 BOYS LEAGUE - Ayrshire earn draw against Lanarkshire at Carluke

In their opening fixture of the season in the West Of Scotland Inter County Under 18 League, Ayrshire earned a 4 - 4 draw against their hosts, and defending champions, Lanarkshire on Sunday 11 May.

Ayrshire had three new players in their team for the fixture at Carluke but it was the visitors who took the early initiative in the match. Ross McDonald fought back from two behind after twelve to win four of the next five holes for a 2 & 1 win.

Murray McCrone required only a par at the last to record a one hole win and extend Ayrshire's lead to 2-0.

In his first appearance for the county side, Elliot Spence was ahead in the final stages before losing the sixteenth and seventeenth to square the match, however he showed determination to win the last hole for a one hole win in his tie.

Lanarkshire's first point on the board was recorded by Graeme Greer with a 4 & 3 win over Blair Fleming.

Ayrshire were assured of at least a draw when Jordan Fraser birdied two of the last three holes in his match for a 4 & 3 win.

In the seventh and eight ties, Andrew Thomson and Innes Frenson kept Lanarkshire hopes alive with wins by 3 & 1 and 4 & 2 over Jack Purdie and Shaun Hedger respectively.

With only the tie between Ayrshire debutant  Craig McKenzie and Lanarkshire's Fraser King still to be completed, Ayrshire only required a half match for a notable win overall, but coming up the last hole all square Mckenzie hit a good tee shot but found an unplayable lie in the roots of a tree a couple of yards off the fairway, and lost the final hole to a par from Fraser Kane whose victory earned his Lanarkshire team a draw in the match.

Match Details (Lanarkshire names first) :-

Craig Dalziel (Airdrie) lost to Ross McDonald (Irvine) by 2 & 1

Jack Currie (Greenock), the current county champion, showed his class with a 7 and 6 victory over Bearsden’s Matt Waterstone and there were solid wins for Craig Orr (Cochrane Castle) and Conor Toal (Old Ranfurly).
Jamie Stewart, also Old Ranfurly, fought hard to finish all square against Hayston’s Stuart Goodfellow and, with Ross Robertson, another Old Course player, coming down the last one up, it looked as if an early season away victory was on the cards.
However, his opponent, Greg Fitsimmons from Windyhill took the wind out of the Renfrewshire sails by holing a 20ft putt to square the game and the match.
